It's that special time of year again. You know, that time when you can't decipher which feelings are excitement, gratitude, chaos, too much pumpkin pie, or stress. That time when we somehow manage to squeeze in more festivities and to-do's than we would ever bargain to survive on a normal day in February. Yet, through it all, we know it is ALWAYS worth it in the end. It is a time where we try really, REALLY, hard to reflect on what is truly most important, but still feel a tiny bit of pressure to make sure our lives are put together and our homes are in order.

Here are a few helpful DIY tips to make your house feel more like a HOME, just in time for the holidays. Sometimes, the tiny details are all it takes to spruce up your style and add a little bit of inviting comfort for your guests.

Clear the Clutter: Look for any clutter near the kitchen, living room, entryway, or any other popular places people will be gathering. Clutter can make people feel uncomfortable and is without a doubt the QUICKEST and EASIEST way to make your home look like it has transformed. Get all of the mail off of the counter and out of sight, put away your newspapers and magazines, tuck away cords, and hide any small kitchen counter appliances that won't be useful this weekend. You will need all the space you can find to prepare for dinner anyway. If you need to, throw it all under your master bed, I don't care where it goes, we just don't want to see it. (Dear Mom, I still love you.)

Pretty Up the Pantry: Throw away expired food, and donate to the local food bank to make some extra room on the shelves. Make snacks and drinks easily available so your overnight guests can make themselves feel more at home. Organize items into locations such as: cans, boxed goods, cereals, snacks, drinks, baking supplies, etc. Transfer a few items from their cardboard box to a few matching containers or baskets to create a more aesthetically pleasing environment.

Clean the Fridge: Move over, spoiled broccoli! (that I had great intentions of eating to prepare my waistline for this weekend...) No, but seriously, clear out anything expired or that hasn't been touched in months. Your fridge will be opening and closing all weekend. Put your guest's minds at ease as they know their food has been prepared and stored in a clean and sanitary place. Scrub the shelves and walls with a mix of vinegar and water, and make room for those yummy leftovers!

Vacuum/Deodorize the Sofa: No one wants to find old gum wrappers, $.37, and pieces of your kettle corn when they sit down to relax. Maybe add a few holiday pillows and a throw blanket to ensure all of your guests are cozy.

Stock the Bathroom: Make sure there are plenty of clean towels and toilet paper rolls so there aren't any unnecessary, awkward moments. Clean the toothpaste out of the sink, and wipe down the mirrors. Make sure everything feels CLEAN. This can be a fun place to add a festive hand towel, rug, or candle, to just add a touch of Holiday spirit.

Inviting Entryway/Porch Decor: This is what separates the "Basic" from the "Extra"... (I think that is what the kids are calling it these days...right?). Make sure your porch is swept and free of debris and double check for any burnt out porch lights.  Add a pretty wreath or some rustic oranges, reds, or yellow flowers to your outside planters. Have a rug that can be used to wipe your feet on. Make sure when your guests step inside, that their first impression of your home, is a positive one. Set the tone with your decor choices, seasonal scents, plenty of lighting, an appropriate thermostat, and a clean and inviting atmosphere.

Count Your Blessings: Lastly, and MOST importantly... take a deep breath, only do what you are able, and when you start to feel overwhelmed, remember how blessed and lucky you are to be preparing your home to be filled with your favorite people, your greatest blessings, and the ones you love so much (well...most of them, wink-wink).  This thought can be the furthest from our minds during stressful preparations such as these, but it is truly all that matters.

We have so much to be grateful for!

As your realtor, I get to hear about some of the most important memories you visualize or hold dear, as they are the ones that run through your mind during the buying or selling of your home. You talk and I listen as you contemplate where the furniture will go, what you will do with that space over there, or tell me the funny story about how the tile was broken in the kitchen a few years back. These are the small moments when you remember that is truly isn’t about the things that fill your home, but the people inside it, the laughter you shared, and the love you felt. I hope this holiday season, you are surrounded by those who mean most to you. That your home is filled with joy, your heart is filled with love, and your belly is filled with yummy, delicious, goodness!

Happy Thanksgiving!
